Interview: Christiane Lemieux

Christiane Lemieux might be forgiven for lying down on the job. As the creator as well as innovative director of DwellStudio, the prominent line of bed linen she started in 1999, the Ottawa-born, Manhattan-based designer as well as entrepreneur has made it her objective to dominate the world of sheets, shams as well as coverlets, a market in which her products today stand out for their sumptuous shades, elegantly graphic patterns as well as determinedly contemporary appearance. having firmly established that foothold, she has since broadened Dwell’s offerings to include Dwelltable, Dwellkids as well as Dwellbaby. before starting Dwell, Lemieux worked as a fashion designer for Isaac Mizrahi as well as the space as well as was style director for high-end house products maker Portico new York. She transferred to Manhattan in 1994 to research study fashion style at the Parsons institution of style after earning a BA in art history from Queen’s university in Kingston, Ont. It was in these early years in the city that she satisfied as well as married fellow Canadian expat Joshua Young, a finance as well as genuine estate exec who now oversees Dwell’s business operations. The couple lives in a refurbished SoHo loft with their two children.

House & Home: What do you like most about your home?

Christiane Lemieux: The space. My hubby as well as I bought a rundown loft as well as renovated it. area is at such a premium right here that having a bit is the biggest high-end of all.

H&H: exactly how would you explain your sense of style?

CL: new York by method of Paris, Brussels or Amsterdam. new York truly influences me, however I like the old world details as well as colouration of northern European cities, particularly the method they utilize greys as well as high-lacquer black. It’s soft however remarkable at the exact same time; it looks contemporary as well as new.

H&H: Do you have a favourite colour scheme?

CL: I like greys with browns. mixing warm colours with awesome ones produces a advanced contrast.

H&H: Do you gather anything?

CL: since we started designing toys for Dwellbaby, I’ve ended up being consumed with vintage toys. I discover them on eBay as well as particularly like the clean lines of European toys from the 1960s as well as ’70s.

H&H: What’s your perfect getaway?

CL: staying at a fantastic hotel in Europe with my family. On my last trip to Europe, I stayed at The Dylan in Amsterdam. It was wonderful. All the spaces have wide-striped carpet in grey as well as cream as well as deep, dark lacquer contrasts; it’s a perfect balance between light as well as dark.

H&H: What country or culture influences you right now?

CL: Belgium. I just came back from antique hunting there. It’s still fairly undiscovered as an antiques as well as style destination.

H&H: What’s your perfect night out?

CL: These days, providing my youngsters a bath as well as putting them to bed, then going out with my hubby for a fantastic meal as well as a glass of wine.

H&H: Do you have a present obsession?

CL: Out-of-print books by my favourite designers, such as Billy Baldwin as well as David Hicks. I look for them everywhere from flea markets to eBay. I’m trying to put together a fantastic style library.

CL: A trip to Morocco with my husband; we rented a vehicle as well as drove across the Atlas Mountains.

H&H: name three people you’d like to have at a dinner party?

CL: My great-great-great grandparents. I believe it would be outstanding to get them all in a space to truly see where I came from. I’m French as well as Mohawk on my father’s side as well as Irish on my mother’s.

H&H: What is your meaning of beauty?

CL: somebody who doesn’t take himself or herself as well seriously; if somebody is as well examined in terms of character or presentation, the result is affected. In a thing, the same: if it’s impacted or overthought, the beauty is gone. the most gorgeous things happen naturally.

H&H: What one product couldn’t you online without at home?

CL: I dislike to state it: my computer. having it at house enables me to leave the office.

H&H: surface this sentence: I feel most comfortable when…

CL: … I’m doing something I’m passionate about.

H&H: What makes you feel rich, satisfied as well as happy?

CL: My work, the people who work for me as well as my family. I have so many people who count on me as well as making sure that they’re happy, healthy as well as engaged is truly fulfilling.

H&H: What makes you get out of bed in the morning?

CL: My youngsters — literally. otherwise I’d sleep up until noon.

Gadget of the Week: 13A Mains wall Socket with built in USB charger

We got asked again a couple of days ago about a Mains wall socket with a built in USB port for charging.  These are indeed very handy and for around £18 you can negate the need for a separate ‘wall wart’ plug in transformer, keeping the regular sockets free for other lighting and appliances.

There’s also a 2 gang version of the above unit (still with a single USB charging port) or a double gang with 2 x USB ports below.

Paint/Hardware dresser plan

I truly have been trying to curb my addiction to “project” furniture (since my basement is full of half-finished projects), however when I saw this dresser standing stoically on the curb in the street this past spring, I understood I had to pull the vehicle over. The casters, the curves, the escutcheons — I mean, come on! however as you can tell, stated dresser has been living a difficult life outside for a long time — the wood on the top is split in half, as well as one of the casters on the bottom is duct taped on. however I feel determined to clean this high boy up!

After some serious cable brushing as well as sanding — goodness do I see 4 or 5 layers of peeling paint?! — I plan to paint this fellow (inside as well as out). Now, the only concern is, do I paint it a lovely grey with black matte hardware or do I go black with antiqued brass?

Let me understand what you think!

Combo #1:

Farrow & Ball’s Plummett (272) as well as some oil-rubbed bronze hardware, like these lovely pulls from Lee Valley Tools?

Combo #2:

Farrow & Ball’s Pitch Black (256) with some wonderful brass-plate hardware, like these traditional pulls, likewise from Lee Valley Tools?

Decisions decisions…

Ask A Designer: Library-Style Living room

Q. I need help setting up the furniture in my living room, which has one wall with dark wood built-ins and a fireplace. The room is long, so I think it needs two separate seating areas. What about tables?

— A.M., by means of email (To submit your own question, see our Ask A Designer™ page.)

A. With all that charming dark wood, I’d like to see you create a handsome library-style space just like in our inspiration shot. To start, consider painting your walls a few shades deeper and warmer than your current colour, like exploring Khaki (UL190-20) (shown) from Behr, to soften the contrast with the millwork.

I don’t think the room is large enough for two full seating plans, but I do think you can fit a small reading area as well as an intimate conversation/TV space. For the reading nook, step your wing chairs to sit in front of the window (see floor plan) and position them to face each other. instead of a table, place an upholstered ottoman between them — it can also act as extra seating.

For the conversation/TV area, keep your sofa where it is, but pull it in from the reading nook a bit to create some breathing room. Then, additionally define the area with another piece. The Austin lounge (shown), upholstered in a brown velvet like Kravet smart 27042-68 or a classic herringbone like Kravet smart 30628-106 (both shown), will strengthen the tailored look we’re going for.

You must have enough room for an armchair opposite the lounge, but it can’t be too big — thankfully, small doesn’t indicate uncomfortable! I like the Professor’s chair (shown). It has a small footprint (2′ sq.), but the cushy seat makes it supercomfortable.

Now, for the finishing touches. With its gold-leaf frame and curved stretcher, Annie Selke Home’s Gardiner cocktail table (shown) is a great feminine note to offset the a lot more masculine elements. Layer in pattern with throw pillows made up in Schumacher’s Elton Bird (shown). It has an old world feel that will enhance the library theme. And, finally, to play up the cosy factor, bring in a large neutral wool area rug.

BMW i & Loxone team Up for Solar Powered smart home Charging

I went on a day trip to the Geneva motor show last weekend. There was some fab metal on display (here are some photos of my favs).

Unsurprisingly there were numerous new electric cars at the show. Plenty I’d never heard of too like the Quantino (the yellow car in photo 13).

In an announcement of interest to electric car owners earlier this week, Loxone revealed their new ‘E-Mobility Starter Kit’ which allows you to integrate your BMW i wallbox charger with their Miniserver smart home controller.

The setup will allow your BMWi to automatically run charging schedules, pause charging and set the charging current. information about the current energy production through your solar panels, less expensive electrical power periods or the total load of your house can be taken in consideration and used to adjust your charging automatically.

Related: Our BMW i3 Review

Loxone say the UK is one of the leading markets in the adoption of electric cars, whilst countries like Germany, typically the frontrunners for embracing new technologies, have been left behind. They believe the lack of infrastructure and count on in a nationwide charging network is one of the main reasons.

BMW i offer the Wallbox Pro, a fast charging station with integrated charge-management for electric cars whilst Loxone take care of the intelligent control logic integration. Such a partnership revolutionises conventional charging methods and offers controlled and efficient charging: BMW i owners can now look forward to a completely free, solar powered recharge in just four hours.

The smart home integration allows the charging to be intelligently managed based on sun-irradiation, the load of other devices in the home and variable electrical power tariffs. The “Green Charging” button lets the customer chose to charge their car with self-generated solar power, i.e. without using power from the national grid.

Related: Loxone integrates Your electric car With Your home Automation System

The co-operation between the BMW and Loxone covers Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK as well as the Netherlands and Czech Republic. The one off cost for the Starter kit (assuming the home has an existing PV installation) is £465, the Wallbox pro is £1500.

Optimised solar powered charging implies no much more fuel costs. As a comparison: The average fuel costs for a car are £9500 over a distance of 100,000 miles (based on a consumption of 49 miles per gallon and a fuel cost of £1.02 per litre)
