Home Tour: A modern & Rustic Chalet In Mont Tremblant
A family of four with a penchant for the outdoors found their optimal winter season trip in the hills of Mont Tremblant, Que. developed by Richard Ouellette, of Montreal architecture and design firm Les Ensembliers, this home calls to mind the warm, rustic splendor of the wooden ski lodges in Megève, France – but with a modern edge. “When you walk through this house,” says Ouellette, “all you want to do is sit on a comfortable piece of furniture and read.” Click through for a trip of this spectacular space.
Designer Richard Ouellette’s method was all about balance. The modern look of the floating staircase was tempered by wrapping each oak tread in warm, thick carpet. Striking pieces from the homeowners’ art collection are given pride of place throughout the home.
In the grand center hall, two angular stools are a mod counterpoint to the rustic reclaimed-wood harvest table, which can do double responsibility as a buffet or bar in a pinch. The oak bookcase was developed to match the height of the hall’s substantial windows, which flood the space with light.
The living room is a study in symmetry — pairs of sofas, ottomans and stools have a pleasing geometry. mixing patterns, like the diamond-ridged rug and tribal-style upholstery on the ottomans, brings life to the tone-on-tone palette, while the artwork offers an appealing pop of color. large groupings of pillows add hits of soft green and cozy, plush volume to the expansive sofas.
A huge, diamond-patterned rug connects the living and dining spaces. The height of the snug upholstered chairs is flush with the table, opening up the surrounding airspace. The chandeliers’ slim lines enhance the effect.
Adjacent to the dining area, the kitchen’s generous island makes moving a dinner party from standing appetizers to a full-course meal to after-dinner cocktails a snap. Expansive counters atop the clean, minimalist cabinets contrast the rows of rustic wicker baskets.
This landing is the ideal spot to delight in the spectacular views, thanks to a bench topped with comfortable fur accessories. “All of these windows are huge. They become additional art in the house,” says Ouellette.
Soft hints of color and a nod to conventional Scandinavian needlework are woven into the guest room’s bedding, pillows and throws. Quirky additions, like a tiny painting of a cow, add a youthful note.
In the open-concept principal bedroom, the views are the most essential design element. On the bed, soft linens layered with a blanket and chunky knit throw offer plenty of comfortable texture, while on the wing chair, a customized pillow fashioned from a vintage fur coat is a playful take on conventional lodge decor.
A two-sided fireplace separates the principal bedroom from the ensuite bath; its starkness is offset by the large windows and dynamic artwork.
The slate floors and floating wooden vanity in the principal restroom are modern and clean, allowing the views to take center stage. A subtly patterned rug and pouf soften the space’s lines.

Flamant-Inspired embellishing
If you haven’t heard of Flamant style by now, you must be living under a designer rock.
In home & house circles, the Belgian look of grey paint as well as bleached wood has had a big effect over the past few years. believe of the 2009 Princess Margaret hospital Showhouse (and look for the magazine spread in the April 2010 issue, on newsstands March 15!).
The look comes to us via the internationally understood store/brand called Flamant, based in Belgium. (You may recall that Lynda Reeves just recently composed a column extolling their virtues, as well.)
Aren’t their kitchens dreamy?
I don’t understand about you, however I’m not planning to move to Belgium any type of time soon. So, I’ve gotta get my Flamant right here as well as on the cheap! Let’s phone call it economical Flamant. as well as right here with the products is Crate & Barrel!
I like this table! It’s called the French kitchen area Table as well as offers for $1,599. You can phone call it your Belgian kitchen area table if you like. I likewise like the other great French-style accents from Crate!
Don’t you like this Artesia Tray for $37? It looks fantastic leaned up against the wall in the Crate & Barrel kitchen area above, as well as the tightly woven rattan reminds me of the authentic Flamant baskets utilized in the Princess Margaret hospital Showhouse kitchen.
These Footed Soup Bowls are only $5! Tres chic!! French onion soup, anyone?
My favourite inexpensive café chair once again (forgive the repeat!): Vienna Side Chair, $149. It’s likewise offered in white!
Loving the sunny hue of this Mario Batali Polenta Dutch oven for Crate & Barrel, $110, as well. Yellow as well as grey is such a hot combo right now, as well as Flamant style is all about grey. I like exactly how in the Crate & Barrel kitchen area they painted the lower half of the walls in grey. It’s such a simple treatment without any trim — as well as so French! Crate & Barrel has two Canadian locations, Toronto as well as Calgary.
Bon appétit!

How To warm Up A Stark bedroom
Q. Our principal bedroom in our new home is stark and empty-looking. walls and carpet are neutral in colour, our bedroom set is dark cherry and the bedding is white. We get lots of light from a wall of windows. how can I make our bedroom feel cozier and less institutional-looking? I would like to do something with chocolate brown and I am thinking of hanging black and white photos. Help!
— J.W., Rockwall, Ont.
A. The easiest way to make your bedroom feel relaxing and comfortable is to introduce a lot more texture, layers and details to the space.
Layering pillows on your bed as you would see in a plush hotel suite (two euros at the back then four conventional and one boudoir) will give your room a luxe, welcoming feeling. White pillow shams with classic, hotel style stitching in chocolate brown would work well with your current all-white bedding and help to incorporate chocolate brown into the space. add another textural layer to your bed by topping it with a soft quilted coverlet that can be folded at the foot of your bed when not in use.
For added texture and interest, consider placing an area rug over top the existing carpet under your bed and bedside tables. choose a rug with a neutral background that has a pattern in muted browns or sage green. If you don’t already have drapery that you are delighted with, think about purchasing panels in glamorous pleated silk in a taupey brown to add drama and a lot more glamorous texture to the space.
I’m not sure what you have for lighting in the space, but interesting table lamps in a warm finish will add interest. consider handsome, boxy lamps that have a classic contemporary look and geometric lines.
Your idea of hanging framed photography in your room is a good one. However, if you are concerned with the space appearing too stark, sepia tone photography will appear a touch softer and warmer than black and white. look for a series of three similar-themed framed photographs to hang above or on the wall next to your bed.
Finally, if your space doesn’t feel filled up enough with your current bedroom furniture, consider adding a sitting and reading area in one corner, preferably by the window. place a comfortable armchair in the corner that works best, along with a small side table in dark cherry topped with a pharmacy style reading lamp in antique brass. With these basic pieces, you’ll create a welcoming spot for curling up with a cup of tea and a good book.

Readers’ best storage & organization tricks
Experience is the greatest teacher, and house & home readers have it in spades. So, we asked our Facebook fans and Forum users to share their best advice. (“Like” us on Facebook or participate in our Forums to be included in regular articles, such as our readers’ reno suggestions article.) Plus, house & home staffers chipped in with some of their preferred “neat and tidy” tricks, too!
1. use baskets.
Jennifer Perdicaris-Kennedy, a house & home Facebook fan, recommends storage baskets to stow away clutter: “Keep storage baskets around the house: one in the laundry room for all those pocket treasures, a basket for school art, and everyday baskets for loose items. This keeps the runways clear, and you can always deal with the basket treasures later, when you actually have the time to deal with them!”
2. Label, label, label!
“I love labels! add them to plastic bins for basement or attic storage,” says Jennifer Knickle-Mills from Lunenburg, N.S. “Photo boxes aren’t just terrific for photos, but also work for storing small items like craft supplies and receipts — label these, too! (Most come with little metal label holders, making them pretty enough to store on a bookcase.) As a less expensive alternative, shoeboxes work just as well — I cover mine with brown craft paper. Or, pick up some wicker baskets. Not only do they look great, but they’re helpful for toiletries, hats and mittens. attach a circular cardboard label with brown jute rope so you can identify contents stored up high.”
Watch H&H style editor Michael Penney transform shoeboxes into elegant storage bins in this online TV segment.
3. protect basement storage.
It sounds obvious, but H&H senior design editor Cameron MacNeil recommends using plastic bins when storing items in the basement. “I had a flood in my basement, but didn’t lose too numerous valuables because everything was stored in plastic containers,” he says. choose clear ones to help identify what’s in them, and purchase all one size so you can stack them.”
4. stay tidy.
“Always, always, always, put things back where they belong when you are finished with them,” says Facebook fan Kim Alexander. keeping on top of clutter on a day-to-day basis can be less time consuming than a once-a-month (or year!) reorganization. Lindsay Reese agrees: “Do a little bit each day! file your bills as soon as they’re paid, and put things back where you find them,”
5. optimize bench storage.
Susan C. Jones saw unused storage space in a window seat, so she added customized doors to the bench for easy access. “When we moved into our home, I had doors retro-fit into the top of a large existing window seat in the breakfast room,” she explains. “Since I typically work from the centrally located table anyway — so that I can be mother and work at the same time — my window seat has turned into a hub for my Etsy lamp shop, where I can store work things easily. I chose flush top doors rather than front cabinet doors, so that the light shines in when the doors are open and I can see everything quite easily. The top doors also make it simpler to retrieve and replace all of the smaller containers stored within. My seat holds all manner of tools, fabric, paint, materials, supplies and files, which I can load back in when it’s dinner time. everything is hidden and the cushioned window is a preferred place for pals and family to sit.”
6. Purge daily and seasonally.
It’s harsh, but we all might be better off if we took on the mantra of Melissa McColl, another Facebook fan: “If you don’t use it, get rid of it.”
“Purge, and continue to do so on a regular basis — even once per year is good,” adds Carley Cooper. “I recently moved into a new house that is half the square footage of my old apartment. Not only that, but the new place has NO extra storage. I was forced to get rid of half my stuff. I had to do some major soul searching on how essential every little thing was. Well, guess what?! All that stuff I thought I needed, I didn’t! It’s gone, and I don’t miss it at all.”
Jennifer Knickle-Mills agrees: “Clear the clutter first, spring and fall. get rid of anything that you haven’t used for years, clothing you just don’t like anymore or doesn’t make you feel terrific when you’re wearing it. getting rid of unwanted items makes you feel good, and donating items will make you feel even better.”
Room Remix, also a Facebook fan, advises not to collect “stuff”. “I really try not to purchase things if I’m not absolutely sure that I’ll use them,” she says. “If I haven’t used something after a few months, or one year for some things, I don’t keep it. I recycle it, give it to someone else that can use it, or donate it.”
7. customize your organization.
“Repurpose an economical Ikea wardrobe for kitchen storage,” suggests H&H design editor Joel Bray. (Watch Joel and Michael Penney demonstrate this project in an online TV segment.) Whatever you choose to store things in, however,be sure to place items in a way that will help you use and put them away easily.
“Organize in a way that works well with your life,” says Kendall Eddy from Vancouver. “In a linen closet, put items that are used many typically on the shelves you can reach. put seasonal items like blankets and extra pillows on higher shelves that are not as accessible. When organizing kitchen drawers, use dividers that actually fit your items. Be reasonable when organizing your home … is this something you can maintain on a day-to-day basis?”
Think about systems that can work for you. “A few years ago, my mother took it upon herself to colour coordinate my closet when I wasn’t looking,” says H&H assistant design editor Kathryn Bala. “It only took about 10 minutes to do, especially because half of my wardrobe is black. It’s one of those quick and easy organization ideas that has really made a difference in my day-to-day life. now I can sleep in for an extra five minutes instead of digging through my closet for that pink cardigan.”
H&H features editor Catherine MacIntosh also created a system that works for her. “I’m not exactly an organized person, but the one thing I like to do is hang my purses all over one wall of a spare bedroom. It’s instant art and colour for the space, and helps me to see and appreciate all of my handbags at once, especially the fancier ones that I don’t use often,” she explains. “I do this with necklaces, too. I have a 10-foot-long coat rack that I use to hang all of my necklaces.”
For much more tips, see closet organizing 101 or our closets & dressing rooms photo gallery.
8. Target junk-dumping areas.
“My family has a tendency to let the junk mail and catalogues pile up on the kitchen counter near the phone,” says Facebook fan Susan C. Jones. “When we moved into a new home, I was lucky enough to have a cabinet door under that very counter. though I sacrificed storage, I had a handyman cut out 2/3 of the built-in shelf, then add an electrical outlet and a pull-out shelf. then I placed our shredder in the cupboard on the pull-out shelf. Now, it’s much simpler to simply go through the mail as we stand over the shredder — immediate clutter control!”
