Mini Review: Google home in the UK

We have an Echo and Echo Dot in the Automated home so when Currys asked us if we wanted to try the new UK Google home we were keen to see how it stacked up.

While comparisons with the Amazon device are of course inevitable, these are subtly different machines. but is the Google home better?

Design

It’s already been said, the Google home looks like one of those plug-in air fresheners. That’s no bad thing, the Echo is very certainly a cylinder of tech and the Google device certainly blends in better in a contemporary home. You can also change the speaker grille to better match your decor.

Setup

Setup is quick and painless and probably one of the best experiences we’ve had with any similar device.

Google’s attention to detail has improved so much over recent times and they really are knocking out some amazing hardware and software.

In Use

The ‘Home’ amazed us and we consistently found the Google assistant to be better up to the job of answering a multitude of random questions than the Amazon Echo.

TIP: Help the Google home team to improve the product by saying: “Hey Google – file Feedback” then your suggestion

I initially evaluated the device at work on fibre broadband and the speed of reaction was incredible. When you consider that your speech is being uploaded to the cloud for recognition, before going through several engines to work out what you mean, before finding the answer and sending it back down as speech, it’s pretty incredible.

However on our much slower upstream bandwidth at home this speed disappeared and there’s now a aggravating delay in answering. Not GH’s fault, but worth baring in mind if you have similar rubbish up bandwidth.

The speakers are decently bassy for the size and go pretty loud too, they can fill a room. You can set the volume from across your kitchen with commands like – hello Google, set volume to 20% – or – hello Google, set volume to 4 (out of a scale of 10).

Skills

The ‘skills’ on the Google home include the ability to control Google Play Music, Spotify and TuneIn (no surprise that Apple music isn’t here).

On the smart home front you can control Nest, Philips Hue, SmartThings, Belkin WeMo, Honeywell and Lutron Caseta amongst others. LightwaveRF is a recent addition and you can check out this up-to-date list of supported partners and services.

You can also use the ‘Home’ in conjunction with Google Chromecasts implying you ask for video to be sent to certain TVs with just your voice.

Privacy

If you’re concerned with connected ‘listening’ devices like this in your home you can read the Google Home data safety and security and privacy policies. but as many of us carry a smartphone with a camera, microphone, GPS and always on Internet connection I don’t see it as an issue.

Verdict

Apples early lead in the digital assistant world has been squandered. Google’s assistant is available on the iphone now (coming to the UK soon).

In the other corner the Amazon Echo is ahead for now in the skills stakes. but while there’s a good chance Google can catch up on this front quickly, I doubt Amazon could ever get close to Googles AI prowess.

Which makes the Googles device the little cylinder we like talking to most. available now from currys.co.uk for around £130.

Angelina Jolie Spends $25M On sensational French-Inspired house

Rumor has it that Angelina Jolie has snagged a $24.95-million, Beaux Arts-style mansion in Los Feliz, California when had by late director Cecil B. DeMille (the Hollywood producer behind 1934’s Cleopatra). Sitting on 2.1 acres in the gated neighborhood of Laughlin Park, this six-bedroom, 10-bathroom house is best for Angie as well as her kids. Did we mention it boasts panoramic views across the popular Griffith Observatory as well as Pacific Ocean?

Click with to take a peek inside!

Built in 1913, the 11,000-square-foot home mimics the look of a French villa.

In the gracious foyer, a large hallway as well as rounded stairway make a grand very first impression.

Neutral walls with arched glass doors leading to the landscaped gardens envelop the formal living room, while a standard fireplace with marble outlining acts as the focal point.

The elegant as well as spacious kitchen area boasts top-of-the-line appliances, a big island as well as marble counters.

There’s even a light-filled eat-in area, which is best for Angelina as well as her six children to take pleasure in household meals.

A sunken sitting area just off the house office features a chalkboard as well as lots of natural light.

The formal dining space has a cozier feel thanks to the warm wood walls.

Every mansion needs a library, as well as this comes total with floor-to-ceiling shelves as well as glass doors.

Even the bedrooms are styled lavishly. This one has direct gain access to to a personal patio area overlooking the Los Angeles skyline.

In one of the 10 bathrooms, a large vanity with a little mirror makes method for a beautiful view of the outdoors.

A shapely archway above the tub as well as crown molding bring architectural rate of interest to the beige bathroom.

Outside, there are several sitting areas spread throughout the property.

There are also multiple pathways taking you from one end to the other.

There’s even a studio home surrounded by mature trees with its own personal entrance.

Inside, an indoor-outdoor living area is best for entertaining guests.Further down in the gardens, an excellent pool with fountains acts as a focal point in the courtyard.

A pool home is an evident must.

The mansion includes its own fully-equipped fitness center that leads out onto the personal gardens as well as swimming pool.

Workout with a view? Yes, please!

Here’s a bird’s-eye view of the expansive estate that’s surrounded by trees as well as bushes for the utmost privacy.

A Robot Vacuum that Doesn’t Suck

… as well as by all accounts that’s the least of it’s problems:

“While the Zoombot’s robotic intelligence as well as floor-covering algorithms aren’t bad, Applica has skimped on a few essential areas that make this a less than stellar robotic vacuum. The vacuum motor isn’t powerful sufficient as well as the system has no beater bar(s) to lift dirt from the floor. The system needs much more wheel sensors so it will understand when it’s hanging off a ledge, has lost traction or is being chosen up by its owner.”

but for $99 you pays yer money, you takes yer choice.

Right to Reply: Z-Wave Responds to Controller Compatibility controversy

It’s fair to state that our publish earlier this month – Z-Wave Controller Compatibility Frustrations grow as dealership Vents – ruffled a few feathers.

So here’s the response from the Z-Wave Alliance. It’s full of fascinating as well as exposing information, directly from the horse’s mouth.

Just Perception?

Is it just perception that compatibility has gotten worse?

The Z-Wave alliance as well as Sigma Designs, maker of Z-Wave innovation continue to work to assist manufacturers move beyond interoperability to compatibility with all gadgets in the market. The understanding that compatibility has gotten worse comes from the truth that the Z-Wave ecosystem has experienced tremendous growth in the past a number of years with currently over 2100 licensed gadgets on the market. With Z-Wave Plus, an updated accreditation program introduced a number of years ago, we produced classifications understood as “device types” which focus particularly on gadget performance from the individual point of view, enabling gadgets to be much better acknowledged by Z-Wave controllers.

Plus or Minus

According to the Alliance, Z-Wave plus gadgets now comprise almost half of worldwide modules…

In 2017, 98% of new certifications were Z-Wave plus with general Z-Wave plus certifications making up almost half of the lifetime overall – as well as we are hopeful that compatibility will ended up being even much better in the future.

So does all that Plusness equate to better compatibility?

Certification addresses interoperability first as well as foremost, however Sigma styles has taken steps to address compatibility as well.  To clear up the difference, it is important to understand that interoperability ensures that Z-Wave “device types” from different manufacturers can interact with one another, such as door locks as well as illumination devices. Compatibility ensures that “device types” are enabled in the gateway.

Wait what? If we’ve got to begin as well as explain to individuals about the difference between “interoperability” and “compatibility” I reckon we’ve lost 99% of the population directly away.

The Controller Problem

So what about the controller problems that stimulated this debate?

Last year a well-defined set of minimum needed “device types” was established for manufacturers of controllers; these new demands mean that the gateway (controller) must support lighting, thermostats, door locks, as well as other minimum needed “device types.” Sigma styles continues to boost these demands as well as has introduced platforms for manufacturers that make it quicker as well as easier to produce controller products, while at the exact same time establishing a extremely high level of device compatibility. Gateway manufacturers may select to work with specific partner brands, as well as this is a business decision on the part of the two manufacturers beyond the manage of Sigma or the Alliance.

Because of Z-Wave’s interoperability promise, they are not enabled to totally block any type of manufacturer’s product from working with the gateway, so what you see is a minimum level of performance offered to non-preferred brands, as well as full performance provided for favored brands.  If the option of brands as well as products offered by a gateway manufacturer are not to the consumer’s liking, they may select to purchase the gateway or service from one more brand that does not favor favored brands. With over 230 different gateway controllers to select from around the world, consumers have many options when looking for a gateway provider.”

So in addition to Z-Wave, Z-Wave Plus, interoperability as well as compatibility now we have to think about that some controllers only have a “minimum level of functionality” as well as not the “full functionality” of others?

How is the end-user expected to understand any type of of this? more significantly why should they have to?

Disillusioned

I’m truly starting to believe the further we get into the 21st century the worse things are getting for the wise house owner. When there were only a lots X10 modules to select from at least things were simple. more option is not equating to a more seamless wise home.

Sure, people who buy a Z-Wave socket to manage an appliance remotely are most likely going to be OK. however the people who want to take things seriously, the ones willing to spend great deals of their hard-earned on a comprehensive system and controller are the ones that are truly getting a raw deal.

Think. Improve.

This is not an assault on Z-Wave. like I’ve stated before I own lots of Z-Wave set myself. They are far from alone here, these problems include an entire industry.

But things are not improving, in truth they are getting worse. As end individuals it’s time for us all to put pressure on those included in designing as well as building these systems.

Because this mess cannot continue.
