Inside The Brooklyn Brownstone Of Remodelista’s Francesca Connolly

The new York brownstone has it all — stately moldings, sky-high ceilings, and the huge city at their perfectly symmetrical doorsteps. There have been lots of examples to lust after, from J.Crew innovative director Jenna Lyons’ former Park Slope pile, to Sarah Jessica Parker’s popular brownstone, however it’s Remodelista co-founder Francesca Connolly’s 1870 house that truly captures today’s style zeitgeist. Showcasing her own individualized as well as pared-back style, the blogger-turned-design darling’s house is a best pairing of spectacular as well as demure, curated and undone, vintage as well as modern.

She gotten the Brooklyn Heights residential or commercial property 19 years back with her husband as well as converted it from nine warren-like apartments into a duplex, as well as a number of years later into a single-family dwelling. At 26 feet wide, it’s a sweet piece of new York genuine estate as well as the finest item of our collective desire. Let’s look around, shall we?

Many people utilize the term brownstone to refer to new York townhouses in general. a lot more accurately, it’s a brick rowhouse that’s fronted by brown sandstone a lot of likely quarried in Portland, Connecticut. Brownstone ended up being prominent when the charming motion made darker materials fashionable. before then, granite, marble as well as limestone were the materials of choice. By 1860, brownstone was altering the deal with of new York’s streets.

The entry’s extra-tall arched doors are normal of new York’s prettiest mid- to late-19th-century rowhouses as well as make a formidable very first impression. Francesca put the home’s most current restoration into the hands of designer Steven Harris. working together with his partner, interior designer Lucien Rees Roberts, he brought back as well as modernized the five-storey house, even recreating the front stoop based on a historic picture of the brownstone from the 1930s. Inside, a curvy light fixture by Alvar Aalto mimics the lines of the doorway. A vintage bench covered in mohair, big mirror as well as floating shelf balance the area with smooth directly lines.

Crisp white walls let the handsome wood wainscotting as well as carved banister take the spotlight in the hallways. Luckily, during the brownstone’s improvement to a nine-unit apartment, the original woodwork was preserved. looks of it can likewise be stolen from the front parlor (brownstone speak for “living room”) as well as kitchen, as Steven opened up the design for a lighter, airy look that’s still historically authentic. when upon a time, moving wood pocket doors would have closed off the front parlor as well as dining room.

Homeowners lucky sufficient to still have a brownstone’s original mantels — as well as pockets deep sufficient to bring back them if they’ve been painted or damaged — are immediately gifted a regal focal point. In the front parlor, the original carved-marble mantel was paired with an elaborate chandelier — a vintage Broadway prop — as well as plays to the room’s standard function as a formal entertaining space. To balance this grandeur, comfortable, low-lying furniture like a sofa upholstered in grey mohair make sure the parlor is an inviting location to plop down with a book or doze in the afternoon sun.

Even die-hard minimalists get a bit weak in the knees at the sight of a brownstone’s original plaster moldings. When the shell of a space is that refined, the furniture doesn’t requirement to work as well difficult or be as well plentiful. Steven as well as Lucien sought to the weighty scale of the original cornices as well as moldings, however simplified their styles for extra millwork in buy to produce cleaner lines. The dining room’s industrial-style windows as well as door were put in in the earlier restoration as well as produce an arresting contrast to the historic details. It may seem unusual to develop a narrow kitchen area in a home so graciously sized, however having it on the parlor level much better fit the kitchen’s present function as the hub of the home. When the home was built, the kitchen area would have been found on the garden level.

“But then you end up costs a lot of of your time on the darkest bottom floor,” states Francesca of her decision to move it to this spot, which likely just held a butler’s pantry in its heyday. The style is resolutely modern, with smooth Corian cabinets, Statuario marble counters as well as walls swathed in Thassos marble tiles. It’s a sea of clean, calming white heated by mid-toned wood floors as well as a wall of leaded glass leading to the patio.

The idolization of the brownstone is due in no little part to its vertigo-inducing ceilings. Steven pinpoints their height at 14′ — high sufficient to make altering a lightbulb a little act of bravery, even on the upper floors. The primary bedroom still feels relaxing though, thanks to pale blue walls (a 60-40 mix of Benjamin Moore’s Glass Slipper, 1632, as well as Cloud White, OC-130) as well as a velvet-covered chaise nestled next to the fireplace.

If natural light is a home’s a lot of lovely asset, it’s no question brownstones have ended up being a preferred place for whatever from film to fashion shoots. Windows deep sufficient for louvered shutters to fold neatly into the frame fill spaces with sunshine. In one of the smaller bedrooms, a platform bed, set low, preserves the window’s full view.

Modern updates provide sophisticated bones a awesome edge. The result is a house that doesn’t precisely simulate the style of an era, however interprets it for today. high-end fittings in the primary shower room continue this system of checks as well as balances. broadened to fill a spare room, the shower room is huge sufficient to in shape a generous, glassed-in shower. A metal frame provides it a tailored look, while glass panels let in lots of light. Thassos marble tiles cover the walls, as well as a lot more patterned Statuario marble is utilized on the floor.

A new Drake Bakery By designer John Tong

the latest addition to the Drake hotel empire is the Drake Commissary, slated to open June 9 in Toronto’s Junction Triangle. described as a fast-casual bakery, bar and food emporium, it’s designed to serve as a social hub and will host culinary workshops. The 8,000-square-foot space has been designed by longtime collaborator John Tong of +tongtong and features exposed wood beams, perforated steel, mid-century furniture and pieces from the Drake Art collection. guests can dine in the Drake’s signature, eclectic-style dining and living room areas (options include table or counter service) or pick up ready-to-eat and packaged meals for take out.

Super Soakers

exactly how do you take a bathtub? At last fall’s Cersaie event — a trade show for ceramics as well as shower room furniture held annually in Bologna, Italy — thieves handled to cart off the prototype for Rapsel’s new Grandtour bathtub ideal from the display stand. created by Carlo dal Bianco, the porcelain tub has an elaborate silhouette influenced by cornice moulding. It does not, however, include an invisibility cloak or moving straps. That any individual handled to walk away with it unnoticed is so impressive, I’m inclined to yell, “Bravo!”

While I don’t condone the action, I comprehend the desire. The romance of climbing into a bath full of bubbles to laundry away the day gets a truth inspect when you’re crammed into a small tub, knees shivering in the air as well as water sloshing on the floor whenever you step — which is often, since you’re so uncomfortable. In those moments, what might be a lot more elegant — a lot more worth it — than a huge gorgeous soaker tub?

Here are three styles I wouldn’t steal, however would absolutely beg as well as borrow for:

Industrial Chic

The Vieques tub was created by Patricia Urquiola for Agape in 2008. It holds as much as 370 litres of water as well as can be outfitted with a teak backrest (yes, please!) as well as shelf, where you can perch things like soap or a flute full of champagne. I desire it likewise came with the Italian rental property it’s photographed in here, however beggers can’t be choosers.

Scandinavian Glamour

It took all my willpower not to climb into the Organico tub when I identified it in the Bisazza showroom in SoHo last may during new York style Week. produced by Spanish feeling Jaime Hayon, it completely balances a boxy Scandinavian shape with slim legs influenced by vintage clawfoot tubs. streamlined as well as glamorous, it turns the shower room into the showpiece of a home.

Modern Organic

Thumbelina was my much-loved fairytale when I was a child, so it complies with that the Be tub is on my present desire list. influenced by a walnut shell, its curvy organic shape is carefully peaked at both ends as well as provides the feeling of being safely cocooned in the palm of mom Nature. Made in north america for Montreal-based business WetStyle, it was created by Canada’s own Patrick Messier.

The best Mac home Automation platform gets even better with Indigo v7 release

The guys at Indigo Domotics have been working hard for more than a year on their latest release and earlier this week they launched v7.

Indigo 7 has dropped the ‘Lite’ option as it goes all ‘Pro’. The developers have clearly identified that the strength of the system is in its ability to integrate a variety of evolving smart home systems for its tech savy users.

Amongst the substantial list of updates and improvements is the addition of the Z-Wave Network-Wide Inclusion (NWI) feature. This means you no longer have to remove the Z-Stick (or other controller) from your Mac to include or exclude devices. This functionality was required for Indigo to work with encrypted modules – another new feature – as the encryption key exchange has to occur within a few seconds of the network include. here is a screen capture of the new device inclusion process in Indigo…

We asked Indigo about the other new features and improvements and they told us…

Communicating with Z-Wave modules is now more efficient, and we’ve made lots of improvements to the plugin architecture. several of our plugin developers are reporting a reduction of 30% to 50% for some of their processor intensive plugins. These performance improvements help not only reduce processor utilization for the plugins, but also for the Indigo Server and the Indigo client (GUI). On the usability side we greatly improved how we display Z-Wave device settings. here are 2 example dialogs for an Aeotec Dimmer and a Duwi Remote Switch…

In addition Indigo now supports RGBW Z-Wave devices. here is an example showing the colour swatch (which brings up a system colour mixer when clicked) and a White level slider for an RGB LED bulb…

ID have also made good inroads into the on-going issues supporting all the latest Z-Wave hardware with over 60 new devices now supported – check out the list at the bottom of this page.

With v7 ID have moved to an all new Indigo up-to-date subscription service with their macOS software….

The MSRP for Indigo 7 is $249.95 USD. along with that, we’re introducing a new subscription model to deliver more frequent updates rather than the old monolithic upgrade delivery. This will allow us to roll out new features as soon as they’re ready rather than having to roll them up into a major release.

Unlike some other software, Indigo does not require an active license to keep working, only to receive updates. The subscription also includes an ‘Indigo Reflector’ for easily accessing your system while away from your home without needing any network / firewall / static IP configuration (Reflector on its own was $29.95 / year previously). You can read how the subscription service works here.

Developers debugging an Indigo python plugin with PyCharm

If you are already a Indigo license holder then you can take advantage of this enormous upgrade from $89.95. Upgrades are available going back as far as Indigo 4 Lite and you can checkout all the details here.

Indigo 7 requires Mac OS X 10.7.5 (Lion) or better and is available to download now.

Modern Cuckoo Clock

My soft spot for cuckoo clocks goes way back. As a child, the cuckoo clock my great aunt owned was a highlight of family visits. I would sit cross-legged on the floor under the intricately carved wooden house and count down to the top of the hour when the elusive little bird would appear from behind miniature doors to sing its sweet song — it was magical.

An element of that childlike wonder has remained with me to this day. However, my taste has outgrown the carved chalet style of the standard clocks. Enter, the Cu-Clock by Magis.

Designer Naoto Fukasawa has imagined a thoroughly modern version of the 19th-century German style. constructed from injection molded ABS-plastic, the Cu-Clock is streamlined and minimalist, while still managing to maintain the whimsy and playfulness that is integral to the original.

The ability to re-imagine such a classic design in a fresh way speaks with Fukasawa’s trademark advancement — probably why the designer’s work has landed in MoMA’s permanent collection.

I can’t help but picture the all-white style above the buffet in our kitchen. Santa, are you listening?

Staying in the Loxone wise show house – part 2

In part 1 we looked at our stay in the Loxone show house in Austria, however there were a number of other sites we visited over the weekend too.

One of the highlights of the trip was our go to to the Loxone HQ, likewise found in Kollerschlag, just across the road from the show home.

It’s one of those stunning contemporary buildings that appears like a spaceship has landed.

An ultra-modern facility with around 100 ‘Loxonauts’ working there, it’s the building where all the hardware as well as software application for the wise house system is established in addition to being house to the administration, advertising as well as training departments too.

Basement

We started our tour of the mom Ship on the basement level which homes the distribution centre. With row after row of lovely Loxone wise house tech, what would you provide for a 10 minute trolly dash around this warehouse

We noticed over the weekend that almost whatever we utilized from pens to cooking utensils were all in Loxone’s business green. The awesome staircase to the next level of base camp was no different as we climbed to the ground floor level of the building.

Ground Floor

Here the reception area sits in front of the training space where partners from Germany as well as Austria get their certification.

You can likewise see the variety of Loxone wise house products in addition to inspect out their around the world places (including their new offices in China).

The rest of this level is taken up with a awesome cafe where everybody enjoys chef prepared lunches each day.

There’s an NFC system for worker snacks as well as drinks as well with wall mounted iPads showing who’s had what. The work hard, play difficult principles here, together with the foosball table as well as basketball hoop, all make the environment seem more silicon valley than Austrian village.

This floor to ceiling rack of Loxone hardware towers above your head as well as it continues on with to the top floor, which was where we were headed next.

First Floor

The big open plan top deck of the Base Camp is where all the action occurs with the majority of personnel being based up here. We visited on a Saturday as well as while it was empty you might picture the efficiency from this enormous office.

Some high backed soft seats were relied on look out across the stunning Austrian countryside as well as obviously this is where you go when looking for motivation or to overcome that software application difficulty you’re working through.

More NFC is utilized here, this time around on a long bank of cube shaped personnel lockers. even the big filing system utilizes this RFID tech to enable gain access to to authorised staff.

Florian Woess, Loxone CMO

Our guide for the day, Loxone’s CMO Florian Woess, told us they had outgrown this building as well as plans are at an advanced stage to prolong their operation in Kollerschlag.

Construction will begin next year as well as this major extension to the existing building will see it grow to cater for as much as 400 people. Loxone’s expansion, from a begin just a decade ago, continues apace.

We asked Philipp Schuster, Managing director at Loxone UK for an update on the growth of the business in the united kingdom as well as he told us…

In the seven years that we have been in the UK, we have seen continued growth as well as we are dealing with a similar circumstance as we deal with with our Basecamp in Austria; after only being in our UK offices for five years, we are looking to triple the size of our office within the next twelve months to fit ever-increasing demand for training as well as the growing size of our UK team. Such fast growth has, at times, been difficult however general it is the very best issue to have.
Philipp Schuster

Future Lab

There’s one more Loxone building in the vicinity. two minutes away from HQ in the village of Kollerschlag itself is the Loxone Future Lab.

This is where the truly confidential R&D stuff occurs as they work on the next generation of Loxone products in overall secrecy.

Our pleads for gain access to were satisfied with grins however nothing else. Damn it

Next Time

In the final instalment we take a go to to an Austrian Self-Build that’s having a Loxone system installed, plus look at Baudisch, one of Loxone’s producing plants in Germany. In the meantime checkout some more pictures in the gallery below.

George Nakashima’s furniture

A few weeks ago, while I was searching for a new lounge chair, I occurred across some pieces by architect/furniture maker George Nakashima. A contemporary of Charles as well as Ray Eames, the Japanese-American designer was a pioneer of mid-century contemporary style with his clean-lined yet whimsical, solid wood pieces. Here’s what I like about his work.

Nakashima’s renowned Conoid chair was named for the studio he developed for himself in bucks County, Pennsylvania. I appreciate that it’s paired down as well as simple, yet still appears like a comfortable location to sit as well as checked out for hours. I desire I had one in my living room!

Although he was born in Spokane, Washington as well as got his Masters of design from M.I.T., Nakashima’s studio shows a deep connection to his parents’ Japanese origins. There’s a sense of serenity in the area — a feeling that brings over into his furniture.

Nakashima’s like as well as respect for his selected material — wood — is apparent in his Kornblut Case: the grain of the walnut produces a dynamic, practically painterly effect.

With its raw, ragged edge, the early Minguren end Table would look gorgeous in a rustic cottage, or to shake up a much more formal sitting area.

When Nakashima passed away in 1990, his child Mira took over his studio, which still creates his striking furniture — like the super-sleek platform Bed above — in addition to newer creations influenced by his legacy.
